Shigeru Ban uses a wood and plastic composite to create an unexpectedly beautiful structure

Shigeru Ban constantly argues the strength of a structure has little to do with the material used. According to the Japanese architect, who is known for using recycled cardboard tubes for emergency shelters, “the material doesn’t need to be strong. We can make a building that withstands an earthquake made of paper, as I did.” Among his latest projects is a pavilion—which will house Artek’s furniture collection later this month at the Triennale Museum Park during Salone Internazionale del Mobile in Milan—built of a wood  plastic composite from Finnish forestry company UPM.

UPM is one of the world’s leading forestry companies, whose main products include printing papers and hardwood products. Its wood plastic composite was developed as a way to recycle waste from various production processes. Consisting of 60 percent wood and 40 percent plastic, the material is melted and extruded in a variety of profiles. The result is a product that can be used for a range of applications, including flooring for decks. Among the benefits: it is humidity resistant, it does not need additional finishing for outdoor use, and one can work on it with the tools used for woodworking.

The ivory-colored L-shaped pieces (known as L-profiles) Ban is using for the pavilion were initially designed and produced to be corner protectors for UPM’s own use. Since then, UPM has developed ProFi, a wood plastic decking material that is similar to the L-profiles. It will be used as flooring in Ban’s pavilion. “This will be the first product of this series on the market,” says Vesa Sorri, vice president of UPM’s corporate venturing.

The elegant, temple-like pavilion is an oblong, 200-sq.-m. space (2,152 sq. ft.). How did Ban manage to take what is a utilitarian material and give it an aesthetic that suits the high-end Artek furniture, including many Alvar Aalto classics, to be displayed inside? By using a single material in excess, it is elevated to something greater. All the load-bearing structures and surfaces are constructed of the L-profiles. Repetition and uniformity, as well as the zig-zag surface produced by using L-profiles side by side, create an altogether unique aesthetic.

In working on this project, Ban learned of the product’s weakness. “I brought this material back to Japan to test it. We found out that the fiber is not very long, so it can break very easily. It’s definitely not an elastic, strong material. But this doesn’t matter. We just calculated and designed the structure according to the strength we found out by testing.” The moral of the story: the strength—and beauty—of a material is in its application, not the material itself.

We attended the Guangzhou(Internation) Building Material Fair on July8th.Our booth was in the pavilion 12.2,and many competiors’ were in the same flat.Many staffs arrived at the pavilion very early,and preparred for the samples and waited for the clients .All participants are hoping a great market in future.  For so many competitors ,we are studing the new kind of outdoor wall panel which will not fade.

New extruder for WPC market newcomers

Battenfeld-Cincinnati (resulting from the recent merger of Battenfeld Extrusionstechnik, Cincinnati Extrusion and B+C Extrusion Systems (Foshan) Ltd together with American Maplan Corporation) has announced a new extruder for newcomers to the wood plastic composites (WPC) market. The company has traditionally favoured conical counter-rotating screw extruders for WPC, and this is no exception.

“The wide range of outputs of the conical counter-rotating machine, from 90 to 275 kg/h, makes it possible to extrude a great variety of different profiles with only one machine – an attribute frequently demanded especially by newcomers,” says the firm.

Known as Fiberex K72, the new model was demonstrated in April at the AMI WPC conference. It produces pre-blended compounds as well as agglomerates and the resins can be PVC, PE or PP. It comes with closed-loop screw core tempering, AC drive and a vacuum unit with twin filter as standard
